Pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew Education
Makom Afterschool (JK – Grade 5)
We believe that every child in downtown Toronto should have access to high-quality Jewish education. Makom Afterschool – which meets at four sites across downtown Toronto, with pickups available from nearby schools – focuses on conversational modern Hebrew, and foundational Jewish literacy. We teach students about Shabbat and Jewish holidays, mitzvot (commandments), Torah stories, and select prayers, all through a pluralistic lens.
Makom ATID (Grades 6-8)
For older students (grades 6-8), Makom ATID offers substantive, nuanced, and pluralistic Jewish learning for its own sake, making Jewish learning meaningful and relevant to contemporary Jewish youth. The three-year curriculum covers the Jewish calendar and Jewish holidays; the Torah’s structure and narrative arc; Jewish history, heroes, and books; and Jewish ritual and ethical practices.
In addition to in-depth Jewish learning, students may opt for Hebrew language classes. We offer multiple levels ranging from Aleph-Bet to conversational Hebrew.
Family Programming
Our programming for young families brings together families from across downtown Toronto to celebrate Jewish life in our warm community.
Annual highlights include hanukkah candle lightings, the Purim party, an outdoor matzah bake, and our Lag ba-Omer bonfire.
On the High Holidays and a few Shabbat mornings during the year, we run services specifically for families with kids to participate in together.
Of course, children are always welcome at our regular services, and we provide supervised childcare during High Holiday and Shabbat morning services.
Our Mission
Makom: Creative Downtown Judaism is a diverse and inclusive community fusing Jewish tradition and progressive values through spirituality, learning, and culture.
Makom Afterschool provides high-quality, pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew-language education in three neighbourhood public schools to students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5. Children from the diversity of downtown Jewish families find their place in our warm and welcoming community.
In Makom ATID, Jewish pre-teens and teens discover the wisdom Judaism holds for their maturing minds and bodies in today’s world. Students in Grades 6-8 gather twice a week for nuanced, pluralistic Jewish learning; Hebrew conversation and literacy; and hanging out with their peers.

We're committed to ensuring that finances are never a barrier to participation in Makom programs; nobody is turned away due to lack of funds.
Your support helps us provide need-based bursaries to students who would otherwise be unable to attend Makom Afterschool or ATID, offer subsidized rates for other programs, and continue building our inclusive community.
